Un-learning

Sometimes there is so much pressure to be an expert that I forget to change and grow – how about you?

But, here’s the truth: I don’t have to pretend that what I know is all there is. The events of 2020 have been a harsh reminder that what I thought I knew may not be enough. More than ever, I need to remember that success happens when I am flexible and resilient, and that takes openness to change. But to do something new I have to stop doing everything the way I’ve always done it.

To un-learn, I figure I must do three things:

  1. Listen Better: Instead of always focusing on what I “know,” listen to others to find out where I might need to learn something new.

  2. Ignite Curiosity: When it is suggested I should change something, investigate what that could look like instead of becoming defensive. Gather information. Have conversations with others. Enthusiastically consider possibilities.

  3. Be Courageous: Boldly commit to un-learning. Move toward change instead of settling into fear. It takes courage to let go, but the process is amazingly freeing.

What do you have to un-learn today?
